Dr. Keith Thompson was interim node leader of the Central node during the hiring and establishment of the LRF Chair. He holds a Canada Research Chair in Marine Prediction and Environmental Statistics at Dalhousie University. He is jointly appointed in the Department of Oceanography and the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

His research interests include shelf and deep ocean modelling, data assimilation, sea level variation and the analysis of extremes. His research group developed the first operational storm surge model for the east coast of Canada and he is presently working with colleagues at DFO on an eddy resolving model of the North Atlantic that can make forecasts with lead times of tens of days. He has experience in variational and sequential forms of data assimilation and is presently using particle filters to assimilate Lagrangian data into ocean models. He is a member of the Science Advisory Committee for the Global Sea Level Observing System (GLOSS) and was a member of the Coastal Ocean Observations Panel of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) from 1998 to 2005. He was co-lead investigator of the GOAPP research network from 2006 to 2011.
