Dr. Eric Oliver received his Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography from Dalhousie University in 2011. His thesis focussed on the role of the Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) in oceanic variability. He identified several regions where the MJO plays a major role in intraseasonal oceanic variability (e.g., The Gulf of Carpentaria, the northeastern Indian Ocean, the Equatorial Pacific and west coast of the Americas). In his Ph.D. studies he also generated a 100-year reconstruction of the Madden-Julian Oscillation index (available on his website). Most recently, he worked on a project to describe and map extreme current speeds in the northwest Atlantic.
